The Sun Shone and So Did the Gold!!Wednesday, 27th November twenty- three members and guests left a sunny Calpe to arrive in a disappointingly grey Gandía. With an hour of free time, some people found local cafés, some discovered the pedestrian street of shops headed by five statues of the infamous Borja family. And then the sun came out…. Just in time for our visit to the Ducal Palace. Situated in the historic centre of Gandía, the Palace was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1964 and is one of the most famous buildings in the Region of Valencia.…

Calpe Open Mic is hosted by the duo Elderberry Wine (Mark and Liz) and meets every Wednesday from 7pm at Cafe Bar Club de Tenis in Calpe. Admission is by voluntary contribution which includes a raffle ticket for prizes. We save the money to fund a UK professional act once a year to come over for a concert. Musicians and singers are invited to perform, to show off their talents. An average evening would be eight different performances in each half. This results in a variety of styles and genres of music, country, folk, blues, vintage pop etc. making an…
On Friday 15th November we held our AGM at Calpe Tennis Club. 49 members attended and were welcomed with complimentary coffee before the meeting. Talk was loud with lots of laughter prior to the formal part of the morning. All Committee members presented briefly on their particular responsibilities and the President gave a short report on general items. The President and committee members were approved unanimously to forge ahead with arrangements for a busy 2025. We were very sorry that Freda Croasdell was resigning as Travel Organiser following the death of her husband. Thanks were given for all her hard…
We hold our usual social evening every two months at Yodel Bar. This week saw an American themed event on Monday 19th with some people coming kitted out in clothes representing the USA. One couple had lovely socks! The largest gathering there yet saw 35 people listening to some really great American songs from Mark and David on guitar with some audience members joining in. We had some new members request to join and there was an activity involving maps which provided an opportunity to meet new people. With both the President and the Catering Assistant with arms in plaster…
Held on the 16th November 2023, at the LAFMA Premises, Edificio Santa Marta , Calpe. The Meeting opened at 10.50am. Apologies were received from: Hilary Hare, Annette Warr, Verity Waddell. The President welcomed 60 members who attended and opened the meeting by sending good wishes to Verity Waddell, a past President of U3A Calpe, who is very ill at the moment. Minutes of the previous AGM on 17th November 2022 had been published on the website shortly after the meeting and were therefore taken as read. The President reminded members that the monthly Newsletter had been used to provided regular…
Kutxabank has closed its Calpe branch and relocated our account to Benidorm. Banks require two signatories for withdrawals which means making a trip to Benidorm each time and it is becoming increasingly impractical to go there to make transactions. So the committee decided to change banks to have a branch nearer to home. The old Kutxabank account will remain open for the time being but will eventually be wound down and closed. From now on, members should make any incoming payments (membership subscriptions, payments for trips, etc.) into the new Sabadell account. See the Bank Details page for more information…
On September 12th, 20 members and two guests left Calpe to join the Kontiki ferry from Alicante to Tabarca Island. We were very fortunate with the weather. Both crossings were beautifully calm and the sun shone all day. Tabarca Island is the only inhabited island in the Valencian region and is very popular with tourists during the summer months but the return to school and home for many meant that the island was comfortably vibrant without being too busy. Free time on the island and our travellers had the choice of exploring it’s historical heritage or sampling the fish dishes…
Twenty years ago, Calpe U3A set up its website. The pages, pictures and text from those days seem to have been lost. Where did they go? Before looking back at what there was in those days and what became of it, it could be useful to explain what a website is and how it works (only a hundred words or so; be patient). A website like ours consists of content (like text and pictures) and structure (articles with dates, titles, and navigation links between them). Like any other website, the U3A Calpe site’s content and structure are stored (‘hosted’) on…
16/07/2024 – Awesome Acrobatics! Not only acrobats but fire dancers, jugglers, hula hoops, cyr wheel, comical court jesters, sensational costumes, music and visual effects…. even snow…. This is the amazing show that twenty-one U3A Calpe members experienced this week at the first night of Cirque du Soleil’s ‘Alegria’ performance in Alicante. The company has a world-wide reputation as being a top entertainer and this show certainly did not disappoint! On a very warm evening we were all very pleased to take our seats inside the wonderfully cool ‘big top’. The evening hadn’t started too well, as the bus we were…
