U3A Calpe held its first General meeting of the new season recently. President Liam McKervey spoke of the very positive response from members to the appeal for support from Cruz Roja, who currently have 41 babies under six months in the town needing food and nappies. This is an unprecedented situation. So far, 250 euros in cash and donations of goods have been passed to Cruz Roja, providing enough food for three weeks for each child. But this is an ongoing problem and it was agreed at the meeting that the Christmas Toy Collection this year would be expanded to include food and clothing for babies and toddlers. Meanwhile, members were urged to continue with their donations of cash and baby supplies to the Cruz Roja office in Calle Maria Jorro. The President had contacted other U3A organizations in the region to alert them to the problems currently faced by Cruz Roja and was very grateful for the support already received from Vall de Pop U3A.
The speaker at the meeting was local author Chris Hare. He gave a lively and amusing talk about his career as a people photographer, describing, for example, the occasion he was asked to photograph Princess Diana when she visited a retirement home. He then went on to illustrate how incidents from real life had been helpful to him in developing characters for his recently-published novel, and read an extract from his book.
The next General meeting will be held in the Saló Blau on Thursday 21st October at 10.30am. The U3A Choir, led by Mary Anderton, will be performing a selection of items as a ‘taster’ for their forthcoming Christmas Carol concert on November 25th. The choir is in urgent need of more male voices, but all are welcome at rehearsals, Wednesdays 6.00-7.30pm, in the Civic Centre. The choir also needs an accompanist – please contact Mary Anderton via the U3A website if you can help.
