October General Meeting

0

Recently, on 21st October, Calpe U3A held its usual monthly General meeting at the Casa de Cultura. Members present were treated to a short performance by the U3A Choir, most ably led by Mary Anderton, in tribute to Jenny O’Neill, a previous Treasurer of the Choir, who died recently. The choir performed four pieces, including “You Raise Me Up”, a choral version of the classic hit brought to international fame by Josh Groban in 2003, and an old favourite, “Climb Every Mountain”, from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, The Sound of Music, for which Mary encouraged audience participation! Members were delighted by the concert and the quality of the singing. The performance was a ‘taster’ for the choir’s forthcoming concert, entitled “A Winter Wonderland” on the evening of November 26th, also at the Casa de Cultura, which is in aid of Make a Smile, a local charity supporting children in care, by providing food and other necessities.

During the meeting, U3A President, Liam McKervey, announced the beginning of the Christmas 2021 Appeal in support of Cruz Roja. Last year’s Toy appeal was extremely successful, ensuring that needy local youngsters had gifts for the Three Kings festival last January and for their birthdays during this year. Following the very valuable help provided by Calpe U3A and Vall de Pop U3A members recently, to alleviate the plight of over 40 Calpe babies in desperate circumstances, it has been agreed that this year’s Christmas appeal will be for baby supplies as well as toys for children. So, over the next few weeks, please start to collect items for the Appeal – toys for children of all ages, baby clothes, baby equipment, baby and toddler foods and nappies. If you can, encourage relatives, friends and neighbours to contribute too. An extra item popped in your shopping trolley during your weekly shop, between now and Christmas, will make such a difference. Cash donations can be made via the U3A Calpe website or in an envelope to the U3A mailbox at Total Postal, Carrer Corbeta, Calpe. To help our Treasurer, please indicate that the money is for “Toy & Baby Christmas Appeal 2021”. As last year, a Collection Day will be organized, closer to Christmas, when toys, baby items or cash can be handed over to U3A’s Christmas Elves and Cruz Roja representatives! Details will published later. Anything you acquire which won’t wait till Christmas, can be taken straight to the Cruz Roja office, Calle Maria Jorre, in Calpe.

At long last, our Travel organizers were able to announce a number of events, trips and holidays, beginning with a trip to Valencia early in November (9th). This will be followed by a Dinner Dance on 10th December, a coach trip to La Zenia on 11th January, a day out to Fortuna Spa Baths in March, a bodega visit in April, a 5-day visit to Extremadura in March/April and a week’s holiday to Ibiza in October next year. Fuller details, and how to book, can be found on the U3A website (u3acalpe.org). Payment by Bank transfer, if possible please – details on website.

The AGM of Calpe U3A will be held on Thursday, 18th November 2021 at 10.30am, in the Salon Blau, Casa de Cultura, Calpe. Please remember that masks must be worn at all times, and sanitizing gel used on entry. Members must sign in and provide a contact telephone number in order to comply with Covid regulations. The meeting will be followed by “drinks and nibbles” for members attending the AGM, at the Bar Restaurant, part of the Casa de Cultura building.
